As Federal Polytechnic Nekede Graduates 10,952

The Honourable Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu has reiterated the need for all polytechnics in the country to build up technology-based education and activities in other to boost the economic advancement of the nation.

The Minister who stated this in an address he delivered at the 19th convocation ceremony of Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri, Imo State also charged the polytechnics authority to ensure that they equip the students with necessary and quality skills for employment, entrepreneurship and life sustenance.

While congratulating the graduands, the minister charged them to shun corruption in their future dealing and give paramount contributions towards building the nation. He urged them to continue to stir the stewardship of the country in the right direction.

In her address, the Rector of the institution, Dr. Celestina Njoku stressed that there has been relative peace in the institution since her assumption of office. She therefore thanked the management of the institution, Federal Government, students and other stakeholders who gave her the needed support and enabling environment to thrive in the institution.

The rector stated that the polytechnic was graduating a total of 10,952 students in both the National and Higher National Diploma category as well as certificate courses. Speaking on academic profile of the polytechnic, Dr. Njoku stated that the Federal Polytechnic Nekede is running a total of 64 National and Higher National Diploma programmes housed in 42 departments within the five schools in the polytechnic, adding that all the programmes have current accreditation by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

Also speaking, the Chairman of the governing council of the polytechnic, Mr. Edwin Ogumbo commended the institution for its standard urging polytechnics in the country to groom technologists that will bring about industrial development which will translate to economic growth.

He called on the graduands to abide by the morals imparted on them to enable them excel in their fields of endeavours.

In a pre-convocation lecture titled “The Role of Polytechnic Education in Driving Knowledge-Based Economy for Sustainable Development”, the guest lecturer Dr. Masud Elelu, Rector Kwara State Polytechnic and Chairman COHEADS enjoined polytechnics in the country to put heads together in providing knowledge based functional education. He added that the polytechnic graduates must have essential knowledge to drive industrial enterprises.

Graduating Students

The event also witnessed the conferment of award to 23 eminent Nigerians and inauguration of many completed projects in the institution.

The occasion also marked the commissioning of two academic blocks by the Executive Secretary of NBTE, Dr. M. A. Kazaure which have 24 number classrooms, 10 number offices and 24 number conveniences for complex A; and 14 number classrooms and 12 number conveniences for complex B.
